Wendy Davis –Shero of the Week

Announcing my new side project: Shero of the week. My intention is to highlight one woman, either current or in history, a week that is inspirational and deserves to be recognized. She is not a hero, she is my shero.

There is only one woman to start with after the week she has had – Wendy Davis.

With her filibuster this week in Texas, she has skyrocketed to stardom in no time. In case you haven’t seen the news, Wendy Davis is a State Senator in Texas who gained country wide notoriety this week after staging a filibuster on an abortion bill for eleven hours. With the country watching, she successfully prevented the vote from being cast before the deadline and defended the rights of women in Texas. She is incredibly humble but you can tell how proud she is in this interview with Anderson Cooper.

I can barely stand for an hour without my back hurting, so I can’t even imagine speaking for 11 hours straight. No leaning, no bathroom breaks, giving a speech, on topic for 11 hours. Standing up for the rights of women in Texas. There is now a facebook page for “Wendy for Governor,” and it is easy to see that this is just the beginning for Wendy Davis and her pink sneakers.

It’s hard to imagine that, in 2013, women still do not have the right to make their own choices about their health, but we are lucky to have women like Wendy who fight for us.  You go girlfriend.
